I lived in Houston in the early 90s and those ads were still on TV. Along with Mattress Mack.

Used to see his ads in San Diego as a kid. Hilarious.

Mattress Mack is a Houston icon. He’s donated millions to charity and hurricane relief. He was quite the dork on TV, but he created a tremendous business and has shared his wealth generously.

He was also a thing in western WA. I remember his spots most because they had both Suzuki and Yugo:
Demon-Xanth knows how to operate a street.

Grew up with these on the Sacramento TV stations.

The best people don’t always flaunt it. Good for him.

I saw one of his ads a few weeks ago. He’s looking pretty rough and can’t do the save you money jump any more. It’s sad to watch.

I didn’t realize the extent of his dealership network. From Wikipedia: “The company at its peak had 29 dealerships. Among the markets served by Worthington included Anchorage, Alaska ; Phoenix, Arizona ; Carlsbad , Claremont , Folsom , Long Beach , Sacramento and South Gate, California ; Reno, Nevada ; Houston and Sugar Land, Texas ; and Federal Way , Washington .”
I always got a kick out of his commercials when I was visiting relatives in the Houston area.

He’s only 68. I’m pretty sure he’s had some health issues, though.
